Welcome to Kergloff Farm in Knowlton, NJ. The farm comprises 242 acres, about 90 acres of which are usable pastures. My flock consists of about 80 or so Texel/Dorper crosses along with various numbers of ewe lamb breeding prospects each year.
The flock is entirely grass-fed. My sheep graze all winter long, but are supplemented with hay during that season for various reasons.
Lambing occurs in late April into May and increases the flock size to 200+ during the five to six months lambs are grown and finished on spring/summer/fall pasture.
Both lambs and ewes are de-wormed once per year, and antibiotics are only used to treat an occasional case of mastitis brought on around lambing time.
The flock is also "tended" by myself and my herding dogs. Sheep are brought from their enclosure into open pasture in the morning and the afternoon for several hours each day while the herding dog patrols along borders and acts as a "living fence".
The white dog featured in the photo above is Bella, a young female Maremma who guards the flock when I am away. Bella is quite intelligent, very tolerant with humans, but extremely aggressive with any four-legged creature that enters her fenced-in territory. I sleep well at night...
